A Hidden Gem!

Diamond in the rough was a dream come true! The venue was stunning, and we received endless compliments on how beautiful both the venue and the location was. The Jan’s family were so wonderful to work with, and it felt like planning with friends I had known forever. They answered all of my endless questions and have so many included extras that added that special touch to our day. It truly is rare to find a vendor that feels like their primary concern is you and making your day beautiful and easy - but that is this team. We chose to stay in their on-site cabin and have them bartend our event and could not have been happier with our choices. The photos from the log cabin are beautiful and you can’t beat the convenience of how close the location is. The bartenders were a great time and they were able to make all of our signature drinks perfectly. Can not recommend this venue and this lovely family enough.

Amazing venue, you won't regret choosing them!

We got married here over the September long weekend and I can't say enough of how beautiful and perfect this place is. The property is stunning and beautiful on it's own, requiring minimal decoration as it's just naturally beautiful. The owners are extremely responsive and flexible to help you get the exact day you want. The log cabin is a marvel to stay in so I highly recommend doing that. It was so wonderful to be able to stay on the property, as well as the option to have friends and family camp on property too - it just made everything better having everyone so close and having fun. Everyone that came to the wedding complimented how stunning it was and was so impressed with the place. Go check it out, it's worth it and so close to Calgary or Red Deer that it's easy to find vendors. There's also lots available more locally from nearby towns of Sundre and Olds. We were so happy with our wedding here and I honestly have no regrets about choosing this venue. Thanks Bev and team!

Long, Mixed Feelings Review of This Venue

This is a long review and if I was able to rate half stars, I would give them an overall 2.5 out of 5. We have a very mixed review of Diamond in the Rough. We were married last summer and hands down, the log house accommodation was the selling feature for us! It is truly a beautiful home (and the added perk of the hot tub was a nice addition, as well). The actual wedding venue space itself is beautiful, as well. Although the grey tones in the hall were not what we were looking for, the log house sold us on this venue. Our wedding was planned and organized in 3.5 weeks, and Bev and Murray were very accommodating in helping us get what we envisioned. We have no complaints about the accommodations, venue itself, or anything going wrong the actual day of the wedding (although we definitely agree, as do our family members, that their contract is very oddly worded and laid out and the numbers are confusing to follow – I actually insisted on filling it out there on one of our visits to the venue because it was confusing and hard to follow and I didn’t want to make a mistake, so I wanted Bev there with us filling it out). Our issue lies with the bookkeeping and events after the wedding. The first little thing was that Bev and her family asked if they could start stripping beds and cleaning the house before we were even out of it the day after the wedding. According to our contact, we still had time in the house, but she explained it was going to be a tight turn around to get it ready for the next wedding party arriving, so she asked if they could start. Granted, we definitely could have said no to her request, so I understand part of this disappointment lies in the fact we decided to be placatory, rather than more assertive, but she seemed pretty insistent to get in the house to clean, so we agreed. This actually bothered us though, as it certainly takes away from the next day, newly married feeling when you’ve got a team of strangers scurrying about, cleaning the house. It rubbed us the wrong way. But, that was minor compared to what was to come.
We were sent a final invoice two days after our wedding, which included the bar tab and a $100 damage charge for a tiny wall dent, which occurred when our flower girl opened a chest trunk top in the basement. The trunk was too close to the wall and it dented it (which we were fine with paying). We paid that and all was well. However, SIX MONTHS after our wedding, we got a phone call and email from Bev saying there was a mistake in the bookkeeping and they actually refunded us too much and sent the $2000 security refund, plus, she said we still owed $540; therefore saying we owed her $2540. This didn’t match up with the paid receipts she’d been sending us throughout the 3.5 weeks of planning the wedding and the final invoice sent afterwards. We were downright flabbergasted! And we certainly were not at all impressed that there was an issue being brought to our attention six months after our wedding. If there was a misunderstanding or problem, it should have been addressed a lot sooner, not literally HALF A YEAR LATER! Upon going back and reviewing all the paperwork and payments, the biggest issue that caused all this confusion was a rental package contract invoice that they sent us that said PAID. As far as we knew, according to them and their invoice, we were good on the package portion of the balance we owed them. Obviously throwing a wedding together in 3.5 weeks was extremely chaotic and busy on our end and we were constantly paying invoices, deposits, and so on and so on to multiple vendors, which was a lot to keep track of. We knew we were still going to have invoices to pay them after the wedding, regarding the shuttle and rentals, bar tab, etc., but they had told us we were paid in full for the contract package price, so we assumed we were. They sent out that PAID invoice, not us. That was definitely the primary source of confusion that led to this problem. Upon going back to look this over, we do agree that the $2000 that was sent back a couple weeks after our wedding was not closely monitored by us, in our post wedding/post mini-moon phase, and had we sat down to go through everything, we would have realized that didn't add up. That was certainly an error and oversight on our part, as well. It just wasn't on our radar to sit down and review wedding finances after the crazy last few weeks we had just had.
What we have a problem with, though, is the poor bookkeeping/business managing on their end. If we still owed $540 and weren't indeed paid in full with our contract package price, then why did they send us an invoice saying the whole amount was paid? If they weren't supposed to refund us back $2000, then why did they refund us $2000? They are the ones running a business and those seem like pretty large errors to be making and then realizing half a year later! We have been sure to share this poor experience with friends, family, and anyone asking about where we got married, as it puts such a sour taste in our mouths about our whole experience with Diamond in the Rough. Many people advocated we take the case to small claims court, but we were actually faced with a HUGE family crisis that emotionally depleted us for months after our wedding, as well as my husband being out of work for a couple months after the wedding, and the the oh so fun debt that incurred quickly from having such a impulsive and big wedding in such a short amount of time, so we decided not to pursue it. It has been in the back of my mind for a very, very long time to actually sit down to write this review, but I kept putting it off, as it is very triggering for me to reflect upon. However, I know now is the time couples are starting to plan for their summer weddings, so I knew I needed to sit down and write this. Bottom line, my advice to you if you decide to go with this venue, which is pretty in its own rights, is to make sure you stay on top of their bookkeeping and invoices being sent, because they clearly don’t do so properly; which is unfortunate, as they’re the ones running a business, not wedding couples wanting to use their services.

Owner

Hi, we are Murray and Bev Jans. We are the owners/operators of Diamond in the Rough Wedding and Events Venue. We were told that we could skip posting our age, so we’re going with that!
Our hobbies and interests include our horses, camping, my mini donkeys, Murray’s hunting and fishing, but most of all, our 4 beautiful grandkids! Murray always says we should have had them first!
We have been married for 35 years this year and both feel so fortunate to have had one another, our best friend at our side since the day we said “I Do!” We remember our wedding day with fond memories and smiles on our faces. The hope of our family is that Diamond in the Rough can play a part in helping create those fond memories for others.
We have farmed cattle together for the past 34 years. This last spring, we decided as a family, that we were ready to make a change. It has been a journey and a dream come true.
The journey that we will forever treasure, has been having all of our kids at our sides transforming the farm into a “Diamond in the Rough”. You have been meeting them in prior posts over the past few days. What you don’t know about them is that they are hard working, dedicated and caring young adults that make us so very proud to call ours! Without them, the idea nor the work it has taken to bring the dream to life would ever have been possible.
