1 Jul, 2023The story of our wedding
Our engagement began on Dec 31, 2021 just before the midnight fireworks downtown Calgary to celebrate New Years. Marriage was something we had never talked about doing so it was quite a surprise for me when he proposed. There was no hesitation to say yes though...we had been together for 12.5 years and raised 5 kids together (3 of his and 2 of mine).
The wedding planning started a few months later. We soon learned that with everyone rescheduling their weddings from 2020 & 2021 that we had to make some big decisions quicker than we thought we would have to.
We started with our color scheme and went from there. Our wedding was a Dusty Blue, Cream and Ink Matte Blue and an elegant theme with lots of sparkle and very intimate. Next up was picking a date, which we decided needed to be a long weekend sometime in the summer of 2023. After that we started searching for venues. We picked our final date based on the venue we wanted.
Our guests were all treated like royalty with their own personal table placement cards with little diamonds, to specific roll call table questions that were personal and only something they would know the answer to. We used this as an ice breaker as all our tables were mixed with people who didn't know each other. It made for good conversation starters to get to know each other.

My dress, my girls dresses and the guys suits were all purchased at The Bridal Centre in Calgary. It was a fantastic experience for all of us and we were all treated with such class. Our wedding party was our 6 kids and 2 grand kids. What a great opportunity for some family bonding time. We included all of our kids and their significant others in everything we planned and did. We even involved our close friends. One couple was our witnesses and the other couple was our marriage commissioner and photographer assistant. We didn't hire a wedding planner so it would our kids significant others that coordinated everything for the day from the ceremony music, when we would enter and how right down to the fantastic reception entrance.
Our whole wedding day was held at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino. We had our ceremony in Sundance Ballroom A and our reception in Sundance Ballroom B&C. They were so fantastic to work with right from the start to the finish.
We had a fantastic buffet dinner and all of guests loved the food and desserts. There was so much variety for everyone to choose from. It suited all taste-buds and even vegetarians as well as vegans even though it was not planned that way.
We paid a corkage fee and were able to bring in our own alcohol of our choice which we purchased from a friends liquor store in Calgary. He helped us every step of the way with how much quantity we would need and picked the perfect wine & champagne for us, Everyone loved it! Our DJ was from Revolution Entertainment and he was so easy going and fantastic to work with. Our Emcee had so much fun with him and the DJ helped him along the way with his own experience of doing weddings. They paired us with a DJ that had the same taste in music as what we requested so it made the night so much fun. The photobooth they provided was a huge hit and we had a lot of fun looking through all the photos of the night.
90% of our guest list was from out of town so they were able to stay right at the Hotel for the whole weekend. The Hotel gave us a fantastic rate for our guests' stay and no problem arranging for later check-outs on Sunday morning.
All of our decorations were hand made by us including the candle stands and the backdrop. We had tons of time to plan our wedding so it made sense as a cost savings to do our own including all the boutineers, corsages and girls flowers. We used weddingwire for our invitations which made it so easy to keep in contact with our guest list and for them to RSVP.
We went back to our property to take photos and we're so glad we did as some of the sneak peak ones we have seen from the photographer are fantastic.
We also encouraged our guests to use the wedshoots offered by weddingwire and were so glad we did. We got to see our wedding day from our guests perspective and it has been so much fun to look through all the photos and videos they have uploaded.
We have zero complaints of our day! Our rehearsal was chaos the night before which included a tornado warning so we were unsure of how the day would actually go after that. But it truly was perfect and we wouldn't have changed anything!
