8 Jun, 2024The story of our wedding
My wife and I were engaged approximately a year before our wedding, in June of 2023. The initial planning went fantastic, but we had trouble picking the exact date. My Brother and soon to be Sister-In-Law had a tentative date for their wedding on the September long weekend, the only potential hang-up was that their wedding date would fall exactly on my birthday, September 23rd, and they had wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem to have their special day on my birthday. Of course it wasn't an issue, I jokingly requested/demanded a cake and that was that. They had a little cake for me at the rehearsal dinner and and their ceremony and reception were outstanding.
My now wife and I were still having trouble pinning down our wedding date, we knew we wanted it during June so we could try for an outdoor ceremony, and on a Saturday so that our guests wouldn't have to book too much time off. It was then that Tracey asked the question that gave us the answer we needed:
"Isn't your brothers birthday in June?"

We immediately called the venue we liked the most, the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, and wouldn't you know it they had availability for that weekend.
I told my brother the news, he was ecstatic, but requested a cake, the same as I had.
Hockey Fans may recognize that June 8th, 2024 was another significant day, as the Edmonton Oilers were set to play the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. We knew that if we didn't show the game during our reception our guests may opt to watch it in the Hotel Lounge. One thing lead to another and we were able to broadcast the game after our speeches for all to see.
Our guests had one more surprise during the reception, as an Oilers birthday cake alit with candles and sparklers was brought out. All 54 of our guests sung Happy Birthday to my brother as he blushed and held back tears.
Some people may think that sharing our special day with a sporting event and a birthday was sad, or took away from our celebration - but it made our wedding all the more memorable and loving.
