10 Vegan-Friendly Hors D’Oeuvres to Serve at Your Wedding
Here are a few of our favourite plant-based appetizers that’ll get all of your guests’ mouths watering.
You want all of your guests to enjoy your wedding’s cocktail hour bites, so having a few vegan and vegetarian-friendly items on your menu is a must. You may be thinking “I don’t want to serve kale at my wedding!” and, good news, you don’t have to to appease your plant-based friends. Add a few of these fun pint-sized eats to your pre-dinner menu and both herbivores and omnivores will be grabbing for them.
Here are a few vegan-friendly hors d’oeuvre ideas for your wedding.
Crostini
The beautiful thing about crostini is that they can be stacked with just about anything. Ask your caterer to make a few veg-friendly versions along with your lobster and tartare stacked versions. From mushrooms and marinara sauce to pesto and zucchini, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. We love the idea of doing a few sweeter options, using condiments like PB & J along with different types of fruit.
Crudites
This kind of goes without saying, but crudites are a classic way to serve plant-based eats at your wedding. Pretty much every cocktail hour features a tray of veggies and it’s an easy (and inexpensive way) to give your veg guests some pre-dinner snackage.
Veggie Tarts
While your omnivore pals may enjoy traditional meat pies and quiches, you’ll have to do something a little different for your vegan friends. Try adding some bite sized veggie tarts stuffed with seasonal picks and nut cheeses to your menu. They’re sure to be scooped up in a flash.
Polenta Fries
Let’s be honest, fries of any kind are welcome, but if you want to use something a bit fancier than your average spud, try polenta. These dippable savoury treats can be infused with spices to make them even tastier. If you want to try another variation on the classic, chickpea fries are definitely worth a go, too.
Buffalo Cauliflower Wings
Pretty much every person who has kissed meat goodbye has made a batch of buffalo cauliflower wings. They’re a delicious replacement with the same kick as the OG version. If you plan on serving them at your cocktail hour, make the pieces bite sized (skip the mammoth “wings”) and serve them on skewers so that they’re easy to grab.
Pizza
Everyone loves pizza, even the plant-based community. You can go all out and sprinkle yours with Daiya (or some other faux cheese) and load them up with an array of colourful fruits and veggies. Bonus: these pies also work great if you’re serving late night snacks later on in the evening.
Stuffed Mushrooms
Think of this as the classier version of a loaded potato skin. Fill your mushroom caps with pesto, mixed veggies and maybe even some tofu and you’ll have a drool-worthy hors d’oeuvre on your hands. You can even add cheese to a few of them for some non-vegan ooey gooey goodness.
Cold Rolls
This handheld Vietnamese classic will add a little bit of vibrancy to your wedding menu. You can stuff them with sweet and savoury goodies and serve them with a variety of sauces (soy and peanut-based sauces are traditional). Not only do they taste phenomenal, but they’re also pretty photogenic. P.S. if you’re looking for something a bit more indulgent, their deep fried sibling (AKA spring rolls) are always an option.
Sushi
If you’re already planning on adding California rolls and salmon sashimi to your menu, skip the hassle of finding something new and add a few plant-based options to your order. Cucumber and avocado rolls, yam tempura maki and garden dragon rolls all involve zero fish and taste 100% amazing.
Chips and Salsa
Give your cocktail hour a bit of Mexican flavour by serving up some pico de gallo and chips. If you feel like shelling out the cash on avocados, go that extra mile and add some guac to your spread - your guests will thank you.
