You probably have a pretty solid idea of how you want your wedding cake to turn out, but, before you make a beeline for you favourite wedding cake baker and make a deposit, you’ll want to do a bit of planning. Adding bells and whistles can really affect your bottom line, so you’ll want to be cautious when creating your cake vision. Luckily, we’ve figured out a few sneaky ways to bring down costs (at least a little).

Here are a few ways to cut wedding cake costs.

Don’t go overboard with your design
Keep in mind that more elaborate cakes come with bigger price tags. Yes, it may be difficult to accept a simple style if you’ve spent weeks scrolling through pics of stunning multi-tiered cakes on Pinterest and Instagram, but a sky-high, gold leaf-covered cake just might not fit into your wedding budget. Remember, simple doesn’t have to mean boring. Work with your baker to come up with something that will look amazing but won’t eat up all your dollars (they probably have a few tricks up their sleeve).

Downsize
You know what they say, “good things come in small packages” - well, the same rule can be applied to wedding cakes. Want to go with a more intricate design or a confection from a more prestigious bakery? You may need to consider downsizing and doing a smaller cake. Pro tip: if you’re going this route, you’ll want to have your dessert table stocked with other goodies so that your guests can still finish their meals with a sweet treat or two.

Top it with fresh flowers
If you’ve ever watched a baking show, you’re probably enamoured with the idea of sugar flowers. Sadly, these are pretty pricey because of the time they take to craft. Fresh blooms are an awesome, budget-friendly alternative that can look just as breathtaking. Don’t forget to put your florist and baker in contact with each other so that they can work out a design.

Skip the fondant
A surefire way to up the cost of your cake is by topping your tiers with fondant. Opt for buttercream instead and the price will probably drop a significant amount. While you may not be able to take advantage of intricated quilted or wallpaper designs, you could do a trendy naked cake or ruffled confection.

Opt for a tried and true flavour
Some bakeries will offer to craft custom flavour combinations for your wedding cake, which is amazing, but the service can get costly. Instead of asking your baker to create something brand new, go with a old and faithful off the menu. You’ll probably see one or two that you love.
