How to Plan a Movie-Themed Wedding

Think a movie-themed wedding is the one for you? Here’s how to create an epic film-inspired celebration.

Looking for a wedding theme that really suits you and your partner? Well, if the two of you are total film buffs and love binging on Netflix, having date night at your local cinema and collecting classics, a movie-themed wedding may be the way to go. We’ve created this guide to turning your big day into an event worthy of the silver screen to help you sort out all the details.

Here’s how to plan a movie-themed wedding.

Create some movie-themed stationery
Instead of traditional invitations (and save the dates), create inserts and enclosure cards that mimic the look of ticket stubs. Alternatively, if you really want to go above and beyond, you could make your own mini-size movie posters, complete with you and your fiancé(e) in starring roles and your wedding party as the supporting cast. This will give your guests a hint of what to expect when the big day rolls around.

Find yourselves a theatre venue
Looking for the perfect venue for your movie-themed wedding? We suggest booking a theatre. Saying your ‘I dos’ on a stage or in front of a silver screen is guaranteed make the two of you feel like legit movie stars. Some of our favourite Canadian options include Toronto’s Eglinton Grand, Montréal’s Théâtre Rialto, Camrose’s Bailey Theatre and New Westimster’s The Metro.

The Metro

Use your favourite lines to inspire your vows
If you’re stuck when it comes to writing your vows, turn to your favourite movies for help. Watch a few romantic dramas, comedies and dramedies and take down all your favourite lovey-dovey lines. You can quote them exactly – “if you’re a bird, I’m a bird” – or simply use them as inspiration.

The Bailey Theatre

Serve up sweet and salty snacks
Of course, you’re going to need to feed your friends and family at your reception (unless you want to party with some particularly hangry guests) . While you should probably give them something more substantial for dinner, you can totally serve theatre snacks like pick ‘n’ mix candies and popcorn at your cocktail hour, for late-night snacks and/or wedding favours. Don’t forget to create personalized treat boxes and bags with your wedding monogram or initials!

Select your first dance song from a soundtrack
Choosing your first dance song can be tough. Let the professional soundtrack and score makers do the work for you and choose one of their more romantic picks for your waltz or foxtrot. We’ve created this list of adorable movie-themed wedding songs and this roundup of Disney hits to help you out.

Get creative with your table names
This is where you can really show off your great taste in movies. Name each of your tables after one of your favourite films (or actors). You’ll probably want to keep these a little light-hearted – people probably would prefer a seat at the Casablanca table over the Citizen Kane table.

Make your dress code black tie
Want your movie-themed wedding to resemble the Oscars or Emmys? Forget about a casual dress code – ask your guests to don their finest black-tie attire for your celebration. Seeing everyone in dramatic evening gowns and tuxedos will make the evening all the more magical.

Roll out the red carpet
Create a photobooth in your reception complete with a red carpet and paparazzi. Your guests will love hamming it up and doing their best celeb impressions for the cameras. Don’t forget to include fun props like stars, boas, top hats and faux awards trophies!
